Hyde Park celebrates its 200th Anniversary
Disarming, delightful and seductive. Hyde Park is a living spectacle, a fulfilling vista that has been elegantly enriching Sydney’s CBD for 200 years.
On 13 October 1810, Governor Macquarie separated the area of Hyde Park from the Domain and declared the lush oasis to be for the “recreation and amusement of the inhabitants of the town”. A desire upheld to this very day.
From this date, Hyde Park has seen many changes and has played host to various activities including horse racing, boxing and cricket. In the 1920’s Hyde Park was literally dug up and later replanted in order to install Sydney’s underground rail system.
Today, Sydney-siders enjoy the park as a serene escape from the congestions of modern life. Hyde Park is an enchanting jewel that is worth celebrating.
